Drunk driver claims wife’s life after fatal collision

In a tragic incident that shook the streets of Astoria, a horrifying collision occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, resulting in the loss of a young woman's life. This incident, stemming from alleged drunk driving, not only claimed the life of the victim but also shed light on the dire consequences of irresponsible actions behind the wheel. Rey Perez, a 27-year-old man from Brooklyn, found himself in the midst of this harrowing situation, facing accusations of driving under the influence (DUI) as he crashed his red Nissan Altima, ultimately leading to the death of his wife, Bridget Enriquez, who was seated beside him.

According to NBC New York, the sequence of events unfolded past February 22th, as Perez recklessly disregarded a stop sign, colliding with a Honda Ridgeline SUV near the intersection of 47th Street and 28th Avenue in Astoria. Reports suggest that Perez's vehicle continued its destructive path, striking two unoccupied parked cars before fleeing the scene. Shockingly, Perez traveled approximately four miles before finally coming to a stop in Maspeth, where he sought assistance by calling 911. Responding officers discovered Enriquez trapped and unconscious in the passenger seat, her life slipping away as emergency responders fought to extricate her from the wreckage.

As the investigation unfolded, alarming details emerged regarding Perez's state at the time of the crash. Police officers noted signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and the distinct odor of alcohol emanating from Perez. Subsequent tests at the hospital revealed a blood alcohol content of .113 percent, well above the legal limit. The gravity of the situation was further compounded by the fact that Perez lacked a valid driver's license at the time of the incident, exacerbating the recklessness of his actions.

The tragic loss of Bridget Enriquez serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz aptly articulated the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that such irresponsible decisions not only result in tragic loss of life but also endanger the lives of others on the road.

Furthermore, the incident shed light on the broader issue of road safety in the area. Residents of the Astoria neighborhood voiced concerns over the frequency of accidents and reckless driving behavior, citing a troubling history of incidents on their streets. The collision serves as a sobering wake-up call, prompting calls for increased vigilance and enforcement to prevent similar tragedies from recurring.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating incident, it is imperative to reflect on the importance of responsible driving behavior. The loss of Bridget Enriquez serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of DUI-related incidents and the critical need for enhanced measures to promote road safety. Through collective efforts and a commitment to accountability, we can strive to prevent such senseless tragedies and ensure safer streets for all.
